Baylor community raises $6.2 million for Duncan Cancer Center research
The Baylor College of Medicine community gathered Dec. 7, 2023, for Baylor’s Culinary Stars Shine for Cancer Research event at POST Houston, raising $6.2 million to support cancer research at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. More than 230 guests enjoyed an evening of cocktails, a gourmet dinner, live auction and live entertainment from The Fab 5, set against the backdrop of Houston’s glittering skyline.
The evening’s program highlighted the trailblazing research conducted by Duncan Cancer Center physicians and scientists, who are developing new approaches to detecting, preventing and treating cancer at one of only three Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Texas, as designated by the National Cancer Institute.
Speakers included Baylor President, CEO and Executive Dean Paul Klotman, M.D., and Pavan Reddy, M.D., professor and director of the Duncan Cancer Center. A patient’s family also shared moving remarks about their experience at Baylor.
Supporters of the event and the Duncan Cancer Center included Adopt-A-Scientist – Cure Cancer, the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation, the John M. O’Quinn Foundation, POST Houston and VICTORY Houston, Inc.
The event also featured offerings of Houston’s rich and vibrant cuisines prepared by renowned celebrity chefs who have conquered “Top Chef,” won James Beard Awards and earned Michelin Stars. The culinary stars included chefs Paul Qui, Tom Cunanan, Christopher Haatuft and Nicolas Nikic, joined by FAM Hospitality Mixologist Jarmel Doss and Sommelier Timothy Contreras.
“It was an amazing evening of celebration and commitment to our cancer center and the College,” Dr. Reddy said. “The heartfelt and deep support from the community was inspiring. The venue, the people, the food and the music were spectacular. We are fortunate to have the support. We hope to build on the momentum and forge ahead to redefine cancer care.”
