As Baylor College of Medicine approaches its 125th anniversary, it stands on the brink of a new era of progress and growth. Under the visionary leadership of President & CEO and Executive Dean Paul Klotman, M.D., Baylor has solidified its reputation as a research powerhouse and a top institution for education and patient care.
During the past century, Baylor’s groundbreaking scientific and medical contributions include helping decode the human genome and pioneering modern cardiovascular surgical techniques including the first successful coronary bypass and, today, robotic heart surgery. Baylor ranks among the top institutions nationally for education and research, is the largest recipient of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding in Texas and the Southwest and boasts the No.1 NIH-funded genetics department in the U.S. Baylor is also the largest provider of physicians in the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world.
For nearly 15 years, Dr. Klotman has navigated Baylor through opportunities and challenges, including a financial crisis, two hurricanes and a global pandemic, while creating a strong foundation for the future with a focus on ultra-personalized healthcare. This innovative approach allows for tailored disease prevention and treatment strategies based on individual genetics, lifestyle and environment. Dr. Klotman has been pivotal in building the necessary infrastructure for this effort through strategic investments in people, programs and facilities.
He has led the expansion of Baylor on the McNair Campus with the upcoming Michael E. DeBakey Health Sciences Park and the Lillie and Roy Cullen Tower, a next-generation healthcare education building opening in 2026. In 2023, Baylor expanded its School of Medicine with a new regional campus in Temple, Texas, to help address the shortage of physicians in Texas.
Many of these strategic initiatives started with funds provided by the President’s office. Supporting Dr. Klotman and future presidents ensures the continuation of impactful initiatives that enhance Baylor’s reputation and sustain a legacy of excellence and progress for current and future generations. To support this, we have established the President’s Strategic Initiative Fund, inviting philanthropic partners to join us in shaping the future of health, biomedical research and education.
