Getting to the heart of the matter at the next On The Frontline

On Oct. 30, donors who are part of Baylor College of Medicine’s giving society, The Partnership, will gather for the latest On The Frontline educational luncheon series, “A Pulse on Progress: Revolutionary Cardiac Care and Research.” Attendees will enjoy complementary lunch at The Revaire and hear a faculty panel present on Baylor’s cutting-edge cardiac care and research.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States, accounting for one of five deaths in 2022. Baylor has a legacy of leadership in cardiac care and is proud to feature several of its faculty experts at the event—Gabriel Loor, M.D., associate professor, Division of Cardiothoracic Transplant and Circulatory Support in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, and Ajith Nair, M.D., associate professor, Section of Cardiology in the Margaret M. and Albert B. Alkek Department of Medicine.

Dr. Loor is passionate about maximizing donor organs for lung transplant recipients given the high mortality of patients on the waitlist and the shortage of available organs. He is the surgical director of the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center Lung Transplantation Program. He also has successfully initiated portable ex vivo lung perfusion research—assessing and possibly repairing and restoring lungs that are damaged at the time of the donor’s death—and clinical programs and is credited with the first “breathing lung” transplants in the Midwest (2014) and in Texas (2018).

Dr. Nair is a cardiologist with a specialized focus on heart failure, cardiomyopathies, cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and pulmonary arterial hypertension. He is the director of the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center Heart Failure Clinic, assistant program director for the Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship Program and director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program.

Topics will range from the prevention and early detection of heart failure to heart and lung transplantation and artificial heart creation. Baylor President, CEO and Executive Dean Paul Klotman, M.D., will serve as moderator for the discussion.

On The Frontline is the signature educational event of The Partnership for Baylor College of Medicine, a giving society comprised of a dedicated group of supporters who advocate for the College. This group of donors demonstrates a deep commitment to the College’s work by contributing to The Partnership’s four core values: advocacy, giving, volunteering and education, the latter of which incorporates events like On The Frontline to raise awareness among donors of Baylor’s efforts to advance medicine and improve patient care.
