Matthew J. Wall, M.D. ’84, Res. ’89, Res. ’91, is a professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He obtained his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and completed his general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery training at Baylor under Dr. Michael E. DeBakey. He joined the Baylor faculty in 1991, working for Dr. Kenneth Mattox at Ben Taub Hospital, where he staffed general, trauma, emergency, vascular, cardiac and thoracic surgery. He is board-certified in general surgery, surgical critical care and cardiothoracic surgery.
At Ben Taub, Dr. Wall has held several positions, including director of Emergency Surgical Services, chief of General Surgery, chief of Surgical Critical Care, chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, medical director of Trauma and deputy chief of Surgery. He has made significant contributions in cardiac, thoracic and vascular trauma, limited fluid resuscitation, damage control techniques and multi-system trauma. He is also a professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University for the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.
His work has significantly influenced the care of the trauma patient in both the civilian and military settings, as evidenced by the Military adopting many of his limited fluid resuscitation, evacuation and damage control techniques during the Afghanistan/Iraq conflicts. He has lectured extensively at the national and international levels in cardiothoracic, vascular, and multi-system trauma, damage control and resuscitation strategies. This included a volunteer
rotation in Germany at the Department of Defense Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the evacuation center for all military casualties in the Afghanistan/Iraq war conflict.
Dr. Wall is an internationally recognized surgical educator. He has been the recipient of the Fulbright and Jaworski Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching and Evaluation, the Master Clinician Award, the DeBakey Service Award, as well as multiple Faculty and Mentoring Teaching Awards, all given by Baylor College of Medicine. He also received the Department of Defense Uniformed Services University for the Health Sciences Outstanding Service Medal, the AORN Distinguished Surgeon of the Year, and the Harris Health Lifetime Innovation Award. He is recognized internationally as a founding member of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators at the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Wall also participated in the Inaugural Master Teacher Fellowship Program at Baylor and participated in several of the College’s curriculum redesigns. He has held multiple administrative positions at Baylor College of Medicine and Harris Health and has served in numerous trauma and professional organizations.
