Distinguished Alumnus Award – School of Medicine

Marc L. Boom, M.D. ‘92, MBA, FACP, FACHE

Marc L. Boom, M.D. ‘92, MBA, FACP, FACHE, is president and CEO of Houston Methodist, a hospital system with more than 2,500 beds and 30,000 employees. Its flagship, Houston Methodist Hospital, has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as an Honor Roll hospital six times and the No. 1 hospital in Texas for 11 years in a row. The system also includes a world-renowned research institute, seven community hospitals, two large physician organizations and more than 50 graduate medical education programs. Houston Methodist is affiliated with several academic institutions, including Weill Cornell Medicine, New York Presbyterian Hospital and Texas A&M University.

Dr. Boom, Houston Methodist president and CEO since 2012, holds a B.S. in Biology with High Honors from The University of Texas at Austin, an M.D. with High Honors from Baylor College of Medicine and an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and fellowships in geriatric medicine and general medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and maintains a part-time clinical practice.

He has held numerous leadership positions at Houston Methodist, including executive vice president of The Methodist Hospital. Dr. Boom is also an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, an adjunct clinical professor at Texas A&M University College of Medicine, an adjunct professor of management, policy and community health at The University of Texas School of Public Health and previously an assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine and an adjunct professor of Management at Rice University.

Dr. Boom is a member of numerous professional and community organizations. Dr. Boom serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association. He also serves on the boards of the United Way of Greater Houston and Texan by Nature and the Houston Advisory Board of Directors of Amegy Bank. He chairs the Leadership Institute’s Millennium Group CEO Forum and leads national meetings of dozens of health system CEOs. He currently serves as chair of the Greater Houston Partnership in 2023. He’s also a member of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research Advisory Board at Rice University. Dr. Boom served as chair of the Texas Hospital Association in 2021, having previously served on the organization’s board of trustees and as chair-elect and most recently as past chair.

In 2020, Dr. Boom emerged as a national leader in the efforts to educate the public about COVID-19 and the need for vaccines, leading the way as the first hospital system CEO in the country to mandate vaccines for employees and physicians. He served as a national thought leader, participating in more than 9,000 media placements including the BBC, The Financial Times, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News, Bloomberg, ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR and thousands more. His publications and op-eds have appeared in Harvard Business Review, New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst, Journal of the American Medical Association, the Houston Chronicle and several others.

During his career, Dr. Boom has been recognized for his work by numerous organizations. More recent recognitions include the Ralph D. Feigin, MD Award for Excellence from The Immunization Partnership, the 2021 Public Service Award by the Houston Chapter of the American Leadership Forum and the 2016 American College of Healthcare Executives Regent for Texas – Southeast, Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Award as well as the ACHE’s Recognition Award. In 2012, Dr. Boom and his wife Julie Boom, M.D., received the “Good Samaritan Award” from Interface-Samaritan Counseling Centers. Dr. Julie Boom is a pediatrician at Texas Children’s Hospital. Her special interests are in vaccine advocacy and research. Married for more than 30 years, the Booms have three children, Kathryn (27), John (23) and Janie (17). Dr. Boom enjoys travel, soccer, gardening and gourmet cooking.
