A new era for brain health research in Texas
What is DPRIT?

In the recent election, held on November 4, Texas voters approved Proposition 14, establishing the Dementia Prevention Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT). DPRIT is a groundbreaking new initiative dedicated to accelerating research in the prevention and treatment of dementia and related neurological disorders. Modeled after the highly successful Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), DPRIT will invest $3 billion over the next decade, providing up to $300 million each year for research grants, facilities and operations.
Why does it matter?
Dementia touches countless Texas families and brings a multitude of challenges to patients, caregivers and our healthcare systems alike. DPRIT represents a bold statewide commitment to changing that trajectory, bringing new energy and resources to understanding, preventing and ultimately curing neurodegenerative diseases. By positioning Texas at the forefront of neuroscience innovation, DPRIT will help accelerate discoveries that protect memory, preserve independence and improve lives.
What does this mean for Baylor College of Medicine?
Baylor College of Medicine is already a recognized leader in Alzheimer’s disease and neurodegeneration research, with scientists who are uncovering the molecular drivers of brain aging and developing next-generation therapies. The creation of DPRIT opens new doors for Baylor to expand its impact—from advancing clinical trials to recruiting top-tier investigators whose work will transform care for patients in Texas and beyond.
How can philanthropy make a difference?
Similar to CPRIT, DPRIT funding requires Baylor to demonstrate matching support before grant dollars can be released. This means that philanthropic support is essential to unlocking these resources and multiplying their impact.
Every gift helps Baylor scientists pursue bold ideas, translate discoveries into new therapies and bring hope to patients and families affected by dementia and other brain disorders. Together, we can ensure that Baylor continues to lead the way by unlocking the mysteries of the brain, advancing the frontiers of science and continuing to create tomorrow’s medicine, today.
