Layla Abushamat, MD, MPH

Layla Abushamat, MD, MPH is an endocrinologist and assistant professor in the Section of Cardiovascular Research at Baylor College of Medicine. Her clinical and research focus is on cardiometabolic disease, including the prevention and management of obesity, diabetes, and lipid disorders. She also has a special interest in the role of lifestyle modification via exercise and medical nutrition therapy. She serves as the director of the Cardiometabolic Clinic within Baylor Medicine Cardiology, and focuses on primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease through management of cardiovascular risk factors.  She attends specialized clinics for diabetes and lipid disorders, where she is involved in the training and education of cardiology, preventive cardiology and endocrinology fellows and internal medicine residents. Her current research is in personalized medicine via the application of genomics and metabolomics to better inform the prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic disease and is supported by an American Diabetes Association Cardiovascular-Metabolism Junior Faculty Award and a National Institutes of Health National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases K23 Career Development Award.
