Andrew G. Lee, M.D., Res. ’93

Distinguished Alumnus Award

Dr. Andrew G. Lee is the Herb and Jean Lyman Centennial Chair in Ophthalmology and the founding chairman of the Blanton Eye Institute at Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH) in Houston, Texas. He is a professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and an adjunct professor of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine. He also serves as a clinical professor of Engineering Medicine at the Texas A&M University Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine, an adjunct professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa (UIowa),  a clinical associate professor at the University of Buffalo a clinical professor of Ophthalmology at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), and a clinical professor of Ophthalmology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.  

Dr. Lee completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia (UVA) before earning his medical degree at the UVA School of Medicine and becoming an Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) graduate in 1989. He pursued his ophthalmology residency and served as chief resident at Baylor in 1993. He completed a clinical neuro-ophthalmology fellowship and Fight for Sight postdoctoral research fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1994. 

Dr. Lee has served in numerous leadership roles exemplifying his contributions as a thought-leader in the field, including at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). He is the recipient of the AAO Achievement Award, Senior Achievement Award, Secretariat Award (three times) and the Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a past president, chairman of the Board, and senior vice president for Advocacy of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS) and received the 2026 NANOS Thomas Carlow Distinguished Service Award.  

As a world-class educator and dedicated mentor, Dr. Lee has received various teaching awards 15 times at seven different academic institutions, including the Osler Excellence in Teaching Award, the Baylor College of Medicine Dan B. Jones Teaching Award, UIowa Charles Phelps Award, the Texas A&M Mid-Career Education award, the HMH Presidential Excellence in Education, the HMH Sherilynn Gordon Memorial Leadership Award, the Baylor AΩA Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award, and the Walter Reed Distinguished Achievement Award from the UVA Medical Alumni Association. 

Dr. Lee’s contributions to ophthalmology are renowned, as he has been the invited speaker at over 500 national and international medical meetings, has written over 600 peer-reviewed publications and 14 full textbooks, and has given 15 named lectures.  

He has served as a consultant for NASA, the NFL and the United States Department of Justice. He serves on the editorial board of several leading ophthalmology publications and was the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Academic Ophthalmology. 

Dr. Lee has a YouTube channel, “Neuro-ophthalmology with Dr. Andrew Lee (NODAL)” which received the Silver Creator Award from YouTube for reaching over 8 million views and amassing over 100,000 subscribers, which places his channel among the top 0.5% of YouTube channels globally. He has been named one of the top 30 ophthalmologists in the United States by Newsweek magazine and is the only neuro-ophthalmologist on the list.
