Abigail L. Caswell, DNP, CRNA, APRN, is a distinguished nurse anesthetist, educator and leader whose career exemplifies excellence in clinical practice, education and service. As an assistant professor of Anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine, she is widely recognized for her impact on the advancement of nurse anesthesia education and her dedication to improving patient outcomes. 

Dr. Caswell’s professional journey reflects a steadfast commitment to academic and clinical excellence. She began her nursing career as a licensed vocational Nurse and rapidly advanced her education, earning degrees in nursing with highest honors before completing her Master of Science in nurse anesthesia and Doctor of Nursing Practice at Baylor College of Medicine. Her scholarly work has focused on advancing anesthesia practices and optimizing patient care in complex clinical environments.  

In clinical practice, Dr. Caswell has established herself as a highly skilled and trusted anesthesia provider within Houston’s largest healthcare systems, including Harris Health and Ben Taub Hospital. She delivers care across a wide range of high-acuity settings, with particular expertise in trauma and high-risk obstetric anesthesia. Her ability to manage complex cases with precision and safety has made her an invaluable member of the perioperative care team.  

A passionate and influential educator, Dr. Caswell routinely precepts student registered nurse anesthetists in both clinical and didactic settings, provides clinical shadow opportunities to intensive care registered nurses seeking professional growth and mentors anesthesiology residents and medical students, championing seamless interprofessional collaboration in the clinical setting. Her outstanding talent as an educator has earned her the premier institutional accolades, including the Dr. James R. Walker Clinical Education Excellence Award in 2022 and the Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching and Evaluation in 2025. 

Dr. Caswell is also a respected leader and advocate within the nurse anesthesia profession. She has served in prominent leadership roles in the Texas Association of Nurse Anesthetists, including two terms as president, during which she advanced initiatives in professional advocacy, education and policy. Her influence extends nationally through invited presentations at major conferences, where she addresses critical topics such as patient safety, healthcare equity and anesthesia best practices. Through her exemplary leadership, sustained commitment to education, and meaningful contributions to clinical practice, Dr. Caswell embodies the mission and values of Baylor College of Medicine. Her work continues to elevate the field of nurse anesthesia and leaves a lasting impact on patients, learners and the profession at large.
