The Scott Department of Urology celebrated the class of 2024 on Saturday, June 22 at its annual residency & fellowship graduation banquet. Residents, fellows, and faculty were recognized for achievements from the past academic year in front of an audience of family and friends.
RESIDENTS
Robert “Bobby” Brunner, M.D., was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. He attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 2015 with a dual degree in Economics and Pre-Professional Studies. He received his M.D. from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences in 2019. This fall, Dr. Brunner will be joining the Urology Clinics of North Texas, a private practice in Dallas to begin his career as a general urologist.
Rair Valero Carrion, M.D., is a native of Venezuela who received his M.D. from Universidad de Carabobo in 2002. He completed his General Surgery and Urology training at Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela, graduating with honors. In 2010, Dr. Valero Carrion was awarded a scholarship by Confederation Americana de Urologia to pursue a two-year fellowship in Robotic, Laparoscopic, and Minimally Invasive Surgery in Urology at the Global Robotics Institute in Orlando, Florida, and L’ Institut Mutualiste Montsouris in Paris, France. After practicing in Venezuela for several years, he returned to the United States in 2018 to complete a clinical research fellowship and General Surgery internship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, followed by a Urology residency at Baylor College of Medicine. This fall, Dr. Valero Carrion will join the Baptist Health Medical Group and Florida Atlantic University at Bethesda Urology in Boynton Beach, Fla.
Angeline Johny, M.D., a native of Silver Springs, Md., earned her B.S. in Neuroscience and B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Maryland in 2015. She then received her M.D. from George Washington University in 2019. This fall, Dr. Johny will start fellowship in Endourology at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She is inspired by and grateful for the support, encouragement, and love she has received from her mother, Leemol, father, Johny, brother, Alex, and fiancé, Milan.
Jenna Bates Maffei, M.D., a native of Swarthmore, Pa., earned her B.A. in Biology from Davidson College, in Davidson, N.C., in 2014. Prior to medical school she spent three months in Cochabamba, Bolivia volunteering and learning Spanish. She subsequently found her passion for urology while working as a research assistant for the Urology Department at Carolinas Medical Center. She then received her M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in 2019. This fall, Dr. Maffei will start working as a general urologist in Houston with Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.
FELLOWS
Jason Huang, M.D., a Southern Illinois native, earned his B.S. in Biochemistry from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. in 2013. He then received his M.D. from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2017 and remained there for Urology residency. He now graduates from Dr. Lipshultz’s Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery Fellowship. This fall he will begin practicing at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic here in Houston.
Blair Taylor Stocks, M.D., Ph.D., a native of northern Virginia, earned a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia, in 2010. He then received his Ph.D. in Cellular Transplant Immunology, followed by his M.D. from Vanderbilt University, in 2016 and 2018 respectively. After Urology residency here at Baylor College of Medicine, and now fellowship in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery here with Dr. Larry Lipshultz, and he is looking forward to joining the Scott Department of Urology this coming fall as a specialist in Men’s Reproductive Medicine and Surgery. He is married to Meredith Stocks, M.D., who practices Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Woodlands. They have two children, Winston (5) and Ophelia (2).
Catherine Nguyen, M.D., a native of Seattle, Wash., earned her B.S. in Microbiology and Developmental Biology from the University of Washington. In 2017, Dr. Nguyen received her M.D. from the University of Washington, followed by a residency in Urology at the University of California-Irvine in 2022. She has been a fellow in Pediatric Urology at Texas Childrens’ Hospital for these past two years. This fall, Dr. Nguyen will become faculty in the Division of Pediatric Urology at Loma Linda University, California.
